(Myeik, Beik)
Fronting the Andaman Sea, Mergui is located in south-central Tenasserim (Tanintharyi) Division and had an estimated population of 100,000 in 1996. Because of its good harbor, the town has had a long history as a trade center, serving the northeastern littoral of the Indian Ocean. For much of this time, it was under the control of Siam rather than Burma. During the seventeenth century. an Englishman, Samuel White, served as its harbormaster, and the tomb of his wife Mary, who died in 1682, can still be seen. His adventures are described in a book by Maurice Collis, Siamese White. Since 1988, Mergui, known for its attractive traditional and colonial architecture, has experienced significant economic growth through the export of seafood products to Thailand.
